Finish the entry before the rest of the house
The front door and entry are the first rooms a visitor stands in. Finish those before the back closets.

The front door is the first room a visitor stands in. Finish it before you reorganize a back closet. Wash the door, the glass, and the hardware. If the handle is loose, tighten it. If it is broken, replace that piece. A single handle set is often about $20 to $60 at a hardware store, which is a different job from refinishing the whole door. Make sure the house numbers can be read from the street. A set of numbers is often under $20. A visitor who cannot find the house is already late.
Open and close the storm door or the screen if you have one. A stuck closer or a torn screen is an afternoon, not a remodel. A storm-door closer is often about $15 to $30. Adjust it so the door shuts on its own and latches. Then check the entry light. Replace a dead bulb, and confirm the switch by the door actually controls that light. People arrive in the evening. A dark step is a function problem, not a style problem.
Clear shoes, mail, and coats down to what you use this week. One mat and a working light are enough. A plain mat is often $15 to $40. Extra benches and a pile of shoes make the entry look smaller than it is. If the floor is the first thing in the photo, sweep it after you have moved the pile, not before. The pile sheds.
If you only have one day before photos, spend it on the entry, the kitchen counters, and the main bathroom. Leave the deep closet for another day. The order matters because the first thirty seconds happen at the door. Before every showing, not only before the photo shoot, do the same five-minute pass: clear the mat, turn on the light, and shut the closet. Write that pass on the showing list so it is not a memory.
What to do
- Clean the door, tighten or replace the hardware, and make the house numbers readable.
- Fix a stuck storm door and confirm the entry light works.
- Leave one mat, and clear the daily pile.
- Repeat that clear-out before every showing, not only before photos.
