Carry the closing papers with you

Keep the signed settlement set in your car, not in a box on the truck.

Close view of paperwork held beside a pen.

Put the signed settlement set, a copy of the key envelope list, and your identification in one folder. That folder rides with you. It does not go in a box labeled office, and it does not go on the truck. If you need a page while the truck is in transit, you still have it. A box you cannot reach until tonight is not a file.

Build the folder the night before, from the closing folder you have been keeping all along. Pull the signed statement, the deed copies you were given, the inclusion list, the utility card, and the identification. If the office handed you a packet, the packet is the core. Add a pen and the phone number of the closing office on the inside cover. You are not packing the whole history of the house. You are packing the pages you might be asked to show.

Put the folder in the front seat, not under a first-night box you will forget to move. If two people are traveling separately, decide whose car holds it and write that on the top. One folder, one car. A split set is how a page goes missing between driveways. The keys you are not handing over, and any garage remote you still need tonight, can live in the same bag so you are not unlocking the new place with a search.

When you arrive, file the folder before you unpack the kitchen. A drawer or a shelf you name out loud is enough. You will not want to hunt for it under towels after a long day, and you may need the utility card sooner than you think. The first-week box can wait ten minutes. The folder should not. If a page is missing when you file it, you still have time to call while the day is fresh. A week later, the truck is gone and so is the easy answer.

What to do

  1. Put the signed papers, the key list, and your identification in one folder.
  2. Add the utility card, the inclusion list, and the closing office number.
  3. Carry the folder in the front seat of one car, not on the truck.
  4. File it before you unpack, and call the same day if a page is missing.
